On the Home Front

The progress is slow, the shift in attitudes almost imperceptible. But green is not a fad. Its principles are thousands of years old, and it will shape the way we design our homes, offices, and public spaces in the future. After decades of delays, denials, and false starts, Dallas is finally getting the message.

Sandra Washburn's Bluffview home, designed by Dallas architect Gary Olp, is a model for design as much as it is a model for sustainable living. A variety of windows and clerestories bring in daylight, and a metal roof reflects heat. "What makes me happiest is the light," Washburn says. "The house feels like a sanctuary, even though it's only three-fourths of an acre."
